1988° - Belgian designer and artist based in AntwerpMy practice comprises objects for the interior, design concepts and material research, resulting in functional and autonomous work with a strong focus on materiality, particularly through the use of paper. By exploring the lifecycle of paper, I investigate its potential as both a physical substance and a metaphor. In 2018, I developed my own material, the 'Chaud Paper Composite', which is made from a combination of paper waste sourced from a local print shop and stone dust. This composite formed the basis of a series of pieces created through an intuitive and iterative research process. By reusing my own material waste, I align my approach with the principles of circularity, emphasising paper’s dual role as a physical substance and an indicator of time.My creations are crafted in limited editions or as unique pieces, ranging from self-initiated objects to site-specific commissions. Rooted in a deep appreciation of materiality and craftsmanship, my multidisciplinary projects are realised in close collaboration with craftsmen, engineers and manufacturers.-My work has been exhibited at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille, the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven and the Design Museum in Ghent, and has been featured at major design events. I was a finalist in the 2016 Vitrine pour un designer competition and won a Wallpaper* Design Award in 2021. In 2022, I created a textile and light installation for De Sibbe, an artwork commissioned by Atelier MA+P for Emmaüs.In 2018, I co-founded BRUT, a collective of Belgian designers which won the Henry van de Velde Gold Award for Young Talent in 2019. 	Charlotte Jonckheer &#38;nbsp; 1:PAPER / Chaud Paper Composite:
In 2018, I began developing a composite material made from wastepaper and stone dust. My initial motivation was to create a set of dining chairs with an outdoor aesthetic. Although I was attracted by the idea of using stone, I needed a material that was more appropriate for everyday use — something that was lighter and warmer to the touch.

My research led me to contact Wolf Jordan (in memoriam), a specialist in natural interior finishes. He suggested adding components that would strengthen the surface and fill the pores of the paper without compromising the material's circularity.

After a period of trial and error, during which I adjusted the quantities of each component to create the strongest material possible, the first version of CPC (Chaud Paper Composite) was born: a mixture of wastepaper and stone dust that resembles a mineral material while retaining the structural properties of paper. This makes it flexible and light yet strong, and still porous. The composite is both recyclable and compostable.

To ensure the material's sustainability, I had to source wastepaper that was free from harmful substances and chemical dyes. I reached out to Zwart op Wit, a local printing company that is deeply committed to ecological issues within its industry. I tested a range of offcuts that they considered to be waste. As each type of paper reacts differently to the components and has a different appearance when mixed, it was essential to choose the right quality to create a strong composite. They now provide me with high-quality paper offcuts that form the base of the CPC. Although I initially developed the material with dining chairs in mind, I soon realised that I could not force a design without first understanding the material itself. The outcome would be defined through experimentation, by identifying its strengths and limitations. This process resulted in my first design: an 8 mm curve, a structure capable of bearing significant weight that can be combined in various ways to create different objects.
 
Alongside the 8 mm curve, I continued to develop other paper shapes, each with unique qualities depending on the variables in the production process, such as the condition of the paper pulp, pressing speed and drying method. These explorations have led to a growing variety of objects and material experiments. Each one has deepened my understanding and appreciation of this complex and versatile composite.

I usually work with the natural colours of materials, but in my latest work I have been conducting broader artistic and theoretical research into the colours yellow and brown in relation to paper and our perception of time. While these colours often evoke fragility and ageing, suggesting that the material is brittle and worn, they can also be associated with strength and resilience when combined with natural coatings that reinforce the material. Some of the pieces shown here follow this principle. I use a biodegradable, linseed-based coating that seals the surface and gives it a subtle yellow glow (see IM and the Glazed Paper Lamps). I also work with walnut ink, which strengthens the paper thanks to its high tannin content (see the Full Paper Table and the Walnut Lamp). A similar tradition has existed in Japan for centuries: Kakishibu, a fermented persimmon coating also rich in tannins, is used to impregnate paper and make it weather-resistant. Walnut-based ink is used in both the Glazed Paper Lamp and the Full Paper Table, imparting not only a deep brown tone, but also considerable strength to the paper surface.

 
Although yellow and brown are often associated with ageing and fragility, they can also evoke a sense of strength and protection. This shift in thinking reveals a new approach, one that embraces change in paper rather than resisting it.&#38;nbsp;
