Cardboard & glazed paper lamps
2026
Besides being co-curator of the 2026 edition together with Thomas De Ben at the Arsenaal site in Ghent, I also had the privilege of creating a light installation. 12 monumental lamps made of cardboard and paper were dispersed over the site, countering the bright fair lights with a warm touch.
The Glazed Paper Lamps are crafted from recycled cardboard, glazed paper and connected with steel nuts and bolts. To form one object, the different materials are joined together but they are not fixed, allowing the piece to be adjusted in size and easily dismantled. When the light is turned on, a soft glow is filtered through the shade and creates a slumbering atmosphere. These shades are made from mulberry paper and finished with a linseed bio-coating, creating a strong material with an almost transparent glazed look. For the ‘Walnut’ version the paper is hand painted with natural oils and inks, resulting in graphical variations highlighting nuances of brown. Making every piece unique.
The recycled cardboard profiles come from the packaging industry, normally used for protecting borders of larger shipments. At the end of the paper recycling cycle these profiles are often considered as single use, most of the times being damaged to protect the shipment. Here, on the other hand, I upscale them by reinforcing the surface with walnut ink, and seal them with a bio certified lacquer.
These monumental lights celebrate the versatility of paper by utilising paper in various stages, considering its afterlife and transforming an everyday material in precious building components. paper panels made from Kozo paper are framed in oak. When the doors are open, the paper panels become two large artworks covering the walls. When the doors are closed, it is a functional piece that separates two rooms and creates a restful, meditative space.
The delicate graphic lines result from different production methods, revealing the instrinsic quality of the paper. Through subtle shades of white, matt and silky gloss alternate as the light shifts and the position of the doors changes. When looking more closely, textures resembling leaf veins become apparent, offering a sense of visual tactility.

GLAZED PAPER LAMP : WALNUT
2025
The Glazed Paper Lamps are crafted from walnut wood, stainless steel and glazed paper. To form one object, the different materials are joined together but they are not fixed, allowing the organic movement of paper to remain visible. For the ‘Walnut’ version the paper is hand painted with natural oils and inks, resulting in nuances of brown and possible graphical variations. Making every piece unique.
The woodwork is made of walnut by Matisu, with special attention paid to the visible joints.

FULL PAPER TABLE
2025
The piece consists of two CPC* components, an 8 mm curved piece and a thin flat plate, which are joined together by a walnut wood connection. As the table is lightweight, I incorporated a stone element into its base. This stone can be slid onto another walnut connection point at the bottom to anchor the piece, providing both visual and physical balance. The paper is coated with walnut ink to strengthen the surface, which is then finished with a casein lacquer and wax. The two paper parts are air-dried to create organic shapes that highlight the beauty of paper's movement. This is a unique characteristic of this material.
*The CPC (Chaud Paper Composite), is a material I have been developing since 2018 that combines paper waste with stone powder.
IMPERMANENT MATTER COLLAGES
ONGOING
I began my 'Impermanent Matter' (IM) series of paper collages using leftover material from the atelier. Since making mistakes is an essential part of my design process, I often end up with various types of CPC waste. Accepting chaos, disorder and chance is not only part of life, it also fuels the creative process. This is especially true of paper, given its volatile nature. These unpredictable shapes and textures of the leftovers become sources of inspiration. Coincidence also challenges me to embrace aesthetic choices that are sometimes different from those I would normally make. I have developed a production process for my paper collages (IM), whereby I select the elements to be combined, but leave the final composition to chance. It's an exciting process that consistently yields surprising results, which I can then reframe to achieve the desired balance.
SEASONAL COLLAGES
ONGOING
Following the principle of the Impermanent Matter collages I create each season a series of collages, multiples of an idea. They are quick and intuitive studies that resonate with a particular concept or feeling, or sometimes simply arise in reaction to whatever is laying around.
CPC BENCH
2024
The design of the CPC Bench introduced a new shape within the CPC typology: a “fat curve” with a thickness of 4 cm. To achieve this shape, we collaborated with Anco de Jonghe to create a custom mould for pressing the paper, resulting in a strong, durable form.
To respect the lifespans of the materials and allow for dismantling, we developed metal horseshoes that hold the paper curves in place without permanent fixation. While the strong paper structures support the heavy stone top, the stone (Pierre de Muzillac) adds its own weight and stability in return.
These organic forms, with their seemingly mineral appearance, were designed in harmony with the curve of the client’s interior, responding sensitively to the architecture and the dynamic of the space.

CPC TABLE LAMP
2022
Pierre de Nozay legs, a stainless steel body and a Chaud Paper Composite (CPC) shade are combined thoughtfully in this delicate table lamp. The result is an ambient light object where the qualities of each material becomes apparent through their function; The weight of the stone, the strucural qualities of the stainless steel and the light paper shade interracting with the light. The thin paper curve is made of a unique mixture of waste paper and stone dust - the Chaud Paper Composite (CPC). A material Charlotte Jonckheer started developing in 2018, exploring its structural, functional and aesthetic qualities in a range of sculptural objects and studies. The shade is handpressed in a specific way. Air bubbles create a surprising effect in the material, becoming visible when the light is turned on.

CHAUD SIDE TABLE SERIES DUO
2022
In this unique piece, paper and stone are combined to keep each other in balance. Two materials that, on sight, resemble but are in essence significantly different; introducing a juxtaposition which behaves otherwise through observation than through touch. It should therefore come as no surprise that at the origin of this design, a research into materials is to be found, a consideration of resources that reaches beyond a purely aesthetic or even functional analysis. The upright (supporting) structure - articulated through a pillar- shaped column alluding to a classicist idiom - is made of Chaud Paper Composite. A unique mixture of mainly surplus paper and stone dust. Yet as much as this material approximates the appearance of a stone, it offers possibilities that no stone could achieve. For one, the composite is light and flexible, and before being pressed and dried, allows to take on any shape imaginable. Furthermore, when thoughtfully designed, it is more than strong enough to carry the beautiful Beige dei Medici. Thus, allowing an encounter that creates an interplay between the ambient light and the subtle differences in textures, between massiveness and delicacy, stubbornness and flexibility and where one part feels cool and the other warm.

AFFIX CONSOLE & PILLARS
2020
In the Affix Console, Charlotte Jonckheer combines materials that, on sight, resemble but are in essence significantly different; introducing a juxtaposition which behaves otherwise through observation than through touch. It should therefore come as no surprise that at the origin of this design a research into materials is to be found, a consideration of resources that reaches beyond a purely aesthetic or even functional analysis. The upright (supporting) structure - articulated through two separate, pillar-shaped columns alluding to a classicist idiom - is made of Chaud Paper Composite. A unique mixture of mainly surplus paper and stone dust. Yet as much as this material approximates the appearance of a stone, it offers possibilities that no stone could achieve. For one, the composite is light and flexible, and before being pressed and dried, allows to take on any shape imaginable. Furthermore, when thoughtfully designed, it is more than strong enough to carry the heavy but beautiful French Nozay limestone. CHAUD SIDE TABLE SERIES LOW II
2020
The CSTS LOW II table is constructed out of paper composite and Slate. Recycling paper waste from a local print shop and hand pressing them with stone dust results in colour neutral, stone like surfaces. For the LOW II a natural pigment is added to the Chaud Composite to match the Slate top. Once pressed, the paper composite is still humid and can be bend. They are dried in curves, which afterwards frame the base of the table. The weight of the stone tabletop gives stability to the piece. Each paper form is unalike the other as the air dictates their shape during the drying process. United, the dried paper and the stone, challenge each other to create a series of architectural inspired side tables. The design of the CSTS is defined by strong graphical lines to allow a game of shadows, created by the movement of daylight, over the tactile surfaces.

MASSE BENCH ELEMENT 1
2019
Element 1 and 2 are results of a comprehensive research into materiality, mass and density, specifically applied to a self-developed stone-like paper composite and its distinctive qualities. Thereby, the two individual designs – a stool and a side table – both represent different findings and possibilities in relation to form, structures and aesthetics. The stool’s delicate beams of its seating surface, the open but massive supporting structure of the side table and the elegancy of its top, ... together they encompass the generous applicability and beauty of the material, defined by its endlessly attainable variations in denseness and forms, further emphasised by its unique interaction with light and shadow.

CSTS: Chaud Side Table Series
Composition 1
2018
Derived from a study on the colour grey, the design of the CSTS started with the designers’ longing to create a material which has outdoor aesthetics but has a warm touch. The CSTS composition 1 are constructed out of paper composite and Beige Dei Medici. Recycling colourful print rests and hand pressing them with stone dust results in colour neutral, stone like surfaces. Once pressed, the paper composite is still humid and can be bend. They are dried and held in a series of horseshoe stone moulds; different curves, which afterwards frame the base of the table. The weight of the stone tabletop gives stability to the piece. Each paper form is unalike the other as the air dictates their shape during the drying process. United, the dried paper and the stone, challenge each other to create a series of architectural inspired side tables.
